COURSE CURRICULUM

The Tourism Diploma program at VIU spans two years, combining academic coursework with practical co-operative education placements to prepare students for careers in the tourism industry. In the first year, students take courses such as Introduction to Tourism, Marketing Tourism Experiences, Risk Management and Legal Liability, Diversity and Inclusion, Event Planning I, and Accounting for Non-Financial Managers, along with foundational communication and technology courses. This year culminates in a paid co-op placement during the intersession, providing valuable hands-on experience. The second year deepens knowledge through courses like Sustainability in Tourism, Understanding Visitor Behaviour, Tourism Management Principles and Practice, Market Research, Tourism Places and Spaces, and Event Planning II, supported by a business writing course and electives to broaden skills. The year also includes co-op preparation and a second paid work placement during the intersession, reinforcing real-world application of classroom learning. Overall, the program totals 62 credits, emphasizing sustainable tourism development, leadership, and practical skills essential for the diverse demands of the tourism sector. With small class sizes and a mandatory co-op model, students gain direct industry experience, leadership opportunities, and the ability to manage tourism services responsibly, positioning graduates for successful careers in this dynamic and evolving field.
