COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Services Diploma Program’s two-year curriculum offers a comprehensive foundation in social work and human services through a combination of core courses and electives. In the first year, students complete courses such as Alternative Conflict Resolution in Criminal Justice Systems, Developmental Psychology I and II, Introduction to Social Work Practice or approved alternatives, Introduction to Social Welfare in Canada or approved alternatives, Family Studies, Introduction to Group Work in Child & Youth Care Practice, and Interpersonal Communication Skills, along with fulfilling the degree English requirement. These 30 credits provide students with essential knowledge and skills to understand individual and family dynamics, social welfare systems, and communication in social services contexts. In the second year, students further their learning through courses on Trauma and Resiliency Across the Lifespan, Social Work Practice in Mental Health and Addictions, Methods in Social Work Practice, and a six-credit practicum that provides hands-on experience in the field. Additionally, students choose 15 credits from a diverse selection of electives across the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences, including topics like Indigenous identities and relations, Canadian history, media and society, feminism, global studies, ethics, political science, and sociology. This broad elective component allows students to deepen their understanding of social issues and develop a well-rounded perspective essential for effective social service work, completing a total of 60 credits over two years.
