COURSE CURRICULUM

The Recreation and Sport Management Diploma program spans two years and includes both academic coursework and co-operative education work placements to provide practical experience. In the first year, students complete foundational courses such as Introduction to Recreation, Marketing Recreation Experiences, Risk Management and Legal Liability, Organizing and Leading Recreation Activities, Program Planning I, and Accounting for Non-Financial Managers, totaling 31 credits. Additionally, students participate in a nine-credit co-op work placement during the intersession to gain hands-on experience. The second year builds on this foundation with advanced courses including Leisure Across the Lifespan, Sustainability in Recreation, Program Planning II, Recreation Places and Spaces, Assessment and Evaluation Methods, Recreation Administration, and Business and Technical Writing, totaling another 31 credits. Students also complete three elective courses to tailor their studies to specific interests. A second nine-credit co-op work placement during the intersession allows students to apply their learning in real-world recreation or sport management settings. The combination of classroom learning, practical leadership experience, and paid co-op placements equips graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary for careers in managing and delivering recreation and sport programs across public, private, and non-profit sectors, fostering healthy and inclusive communities.
