COURSE CURRICULUM

The Hospitality Management Diploma at Vancouver Island University is a two-year program that combines academic study with practical experience to prepare students for leadership roles in the hospitality industry. In Year 1, students complete foundational courses such as Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism, Dining Room Operations, Lodging Operations, Principles of Services Management, Leadership Skills, Accounting Principles, Beverage Theory, and Property Management Systems. They also participate in their first Cooperative Education Placement during the intersession, gaining valuable real-world experience. Year 2 builds on these foundations with advanced courses in Financial Control Systems, Principles of Services Marketing, Food Production, Dining Room Management, Human Resource Management, Hospitality Financial Management, Food Service Management, Law and Ethics, and Business and Technical Writing. A second Cooperative Education Placement during the intersession allows students to further develop their skills in a professional setting. To graduate, students must successfully complete all program courses at the 100 and 200 levels with a minimum overall GPA of C+ and demonstrate satisfactory performance in both co-op placements. The program blends classroom learning, leadership development, and industry experience, equipping graduates with the operational, managerial, and customer service skills necessary for a successful career in hospitality and tourism.
