COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) diploma program is structured over two years, combining theory, practical experience, and program planning to prepare students for work with young children and families. In the first year, students take foundational courses such as Principles and Practices of Guiding and Caring, Interpersonal Communication, Program Planning through Play and Creative Expression, along with Child Development and practicums, totaling 36 credits across fall, spring, and intersession terms. The second year builds on this foundation with courses focused on Canadian Early Childhood Education practices, healthy early development, program development for infants, toddlers, and children with diverse abilities, early childhood administration, and family development support. Practicums continue throughout, including specialized placements in infants, toddlers, and children with diverse abilities. Students also engage in counseling skills and professional Child and Youth Care practice or approved electives. The program offers flexibility with practicum opportunities available in fall, spring, and intersession terms. Notably, those who completed the ECEC Certificate program from 1996 onward may receive up to one year of transfer credit toward VIU’s Child and Youth Care Diploma or Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care. This comprehensive curriculum equips students with the practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and professional competencies required for a successful career in early childhood education and care.
