COURSE CURRICULUM

The Dental Hygiene Diploma program at VIU spans two years and provides comprehensive academic and clinical training to prepare students for careers as professional dental hygienists. In the first year, students complete foundational courses such as Dental Hygiene Foundations I and II, Head and Neck Anatomy, Radiography I and II, Pharmacology I, Pathology I and II focusing on periodontal and oral diseases, and Dental Materials, alongside practical clinic experience. The curriculum emphasizes oral health promotion and dental histology, totaling 39 credits in the first year. The second year builds on this foundation with advanced courses including Dental Hygiene Foundations III and IV, Pharmacology II, and Pathology III and IV, focusing on care for complex and medically compromised clients. Students engage in more intensive clinic practicums to develop clinical competence and professionalism. Health promotion is further emphasized through courses on dental public health concepts and community oral health interventions. Research Methodology and Professional Issues in Dental Hygiene prepare students for ongoing professional development and ethical practice. The program also includes three credits of elective courses tailored to dental hygiene, contributing to a total of 37.5 credits in the second year. Together, the program’s blend of theory and hands-on clinical training equips graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in diverse dental care settings.
