COURSE CURRICULUM

Students in VIU’s Computer Science Diploma program are required to complete a comprehensive set of courses designed to build a strong foundation in computing and programming across two years. In the first year, students take core courses such as Applications Programming (CSCI 112), Web Page Techniques (CSCI 115), Computer Science I and II (CSCI 159, CSCI 161), Topics in Computer Science (CSCI 162), Systems and Networks (CSCI 251), and foundational math courses including Calculus I (MATH 121) and Logic and Foundations (MATH 123), along with additional required courses. This first year totals 33 credits and establishes essential programming and mathematical skills. The second year builds on this foundation with courses in Data Structures (CSCI 260), Software Engineering (CSCI 265), Human-Computer Interaction (CSCI 310), advanced programming such as Object Oriented Programming (CSCI 331), Database Systems (CSCI 370), Computers and Society (CSCI 400), and electives including Web Programming or Systems Analysis, totaling 31-32 credits. Students must also complete additional required courses including University Writing and Research (ENGL 115), Business and Technical Writing (ENGL 204), a Computer Science elective at the 200 level or above, and six credits of general electives. These additional courses can be completed at any time but are mandatory for diploma completion, providing students with a well-rounded skill set essential for entry into the IT workforce.
