COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the Engineering Transfer Certificate program at Vancouver Island University is a comprehensive 40-credit curriculum designed to build a strong foundation in engineering principles and prepare students for transfer to second-year engineering programs at multiple universities. The fall semester includes courses such as CHEM 150 (Engineering Chemistry, 4 credits), CSCI 160 (Computer Science I for Engineering, 4 credits), ENGL 115 (University Writing and Research, 3 credits), ENGR 112 (Engineering Design I, 3 credits), MATH 100* (Calculus for Engineering and Physical Sciences I, 4 credits), and PHYS 121 (Physics for the Physical Sciences I, 4 credits). These courses introduce students to essential concepts in chemistry, computer science, engineering design, calculus, and physics, along with developing academic writing skills. The spring semester continues with ENGL 204** (Business and Technical Writing, 3 credits), ENGR 110*** (Additional Engineering Topics, 2 credits), ENGM 141**** (Engineering Mechanics, 3 credits), ENGR 121 (Engineering Design II, 3 credits), MATH 101* (Calculus for Engineering and Physical Sciences II, 4 credits), MATH 141 (Matrix Algebra for Engineers, 3 credits), and PHYS 122 (Physics for the Physical Sciences II, 4 credits). This semester expands students’ knowledge in mechanics, advanced calculus, matrix algebra, and physics, while further enhancing technical communication. Overall, this well-rounded first-year program equips students with the skills and credits necessary to successfully transfer to second-year engineering programs at partner universities.
