COURSE CURRICULUM

The French concentration in the Languages and Culture (Romance Languages) program requires students in years 1 and 2 to maintain a minimum ‘C+’ average in 15 credits of first- and second-year French courses or equivalent. Students who have completed French Immersion 12 may start at FRCH 221 and take only 9 credits before advancing to upper-level courses. Those without French 12 must complete prerequisite courses such as FRCH 100, 101, or 110 before enrolling in intermediate French. First- and second-year courses include FRCH 121 and 122 (Intermediate French I and II), FRCH 221 and 222 (French Oral and Written Practice), and FRCH 230 or LANG 240 (Introduction to Francophone Culture or Romance Languages). In years 3 and 4, students must complete at least 18 credits of upper-level French, Spanish, or language courses, including FRCH 300 and 301, and four electives such as French phonetics, literature, language special topics, translation theory, or related cultural courses. Students may also apply relevant upper-level courses from other departments or approved field school and exchange program credits. The Spanish concentration similarly requires a minimum ‘C+’ average in 15 credits of first- and second-year Spanish courses, including beginner and intermediate levels and one cultural course. Upper-level requirements include SPAN 300 and 301 and four electives focusing on Hispanic literature, poetry, culture, and translation theory. Native speakers are encouraged to consult the department for eligibility.
