COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at VIU offers a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum that balances theoretical foundations with practical application. In Year 1, students build a strong base with courses like CSCI 159, 161, and 162 covering core programming concepts, alongside mathematics courses such as Calculus I and II, Logic and Foundations, and foundational writing skills through ENGL 115. In Year 2, the program deepens technical knowledge with courses in systems and networks (CSCI 251), data structures (CSCI 260), computer architecture (CSCI 261), and software engineering (CSCI 265), while continuing mathematical development with discrete math and linear algebra, and enhancing communication skills through technical writing. Years 3 and 4 introduce advanced topics including human-computer interaction, web programming, operating systems, programming languages, database systems, and computer networks, along with essential theoretical courses like digital logic and foundations of computer science. Students also explore ethical considerations through CSCI 400 – Computers and Society. The program allows for customization through CSCI electives (*a), general electives in relevant disciplines (*b), and open electives (*c), giving students the flexibility to tailor their learning to specific interests or career paths. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in the tech industry or further academic study.
