COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Interior Design at VIU is a full-time program spanning nine semesters, beginning with six semesters of Fall and Spring terms over the first three years, followed by a summer internship between the third and fourth year, and concluding with two final Fall/Spring semesters. The program requires completion of 96 specialized Interior Design credits, 6 English credits, and 21 elective credits, with at least 6 of those electives at the upper level. Students must earn a minimum grade of "C" in all Interior Design courses to graduate. The first year focuses on foundational skills including drafting, CAD, art history, design process, materials, illustration, and design studio courses, alongside English and a general elective, totaling 30 credits. The second year deepens knowledge with advanced CAD, building codes, building systems, research methodology, and design studios, plus a general elective. In the third year, students study interior detailing, further CAD, building systems, and design studios, while preparing for the summer internship. The internship itself occurs during an intersession term. The final year centers on a major project through research, construction documentation, presentation, professional practice, and presentation skills, alongside general electives. Overall, the program combines technical expertise, creative development, and professional practice to prepare students for a successful career in interior design.
