COURSE CURRICULUM

Philosophy (BA) program must complete a minimum of six lower-level courses (18 credits) in first or second year, including PHIL 100 (Critical Thinking), PHIL 111 (Intro to Philosophy: Knowledge and Reality), PHIL 112 (Intro to Philosophy: Ethics), PHIL 200 (Early Modern Theories of Knowledge and Reality), PHIL 241 (Plato and Aristotle), and either PHIL 251 (Formal Logic) or PHIL 252 (Understanding Scientific Reasoning). Students are recommended to take LBST 111 and LBST 112 to fulfill the Degree English Requirement, and those considering graduate studies are encouraged to take PHIL 251. Alternatives for historical and lower-level philosophy courses include PHIL 300 or PHIL 446, which can substitute for PHIL 200 and PHIL 241 respectively. For upper-level requirements, students must complete ten courses (30 credits) in third or fourth year philosophy, including PHIL 361 or PHIL 362 (Philosophy of Mind), PHIL 363 (Theory of Knowledge), and PHIL 443 (Moral Theory), with the exclusion of PHIL 310 and PHIL 399 from this count. Students may substitute up to six credits (two courses) from LBST 360, LBST 370, or POLI 440 to partially fulfill their upper-level philosophy requirements. This flexible structure encourages a well-rounded philosophical education while allowing interdisciplinary exploration within related fields.
