COURSE CURRICULUM

The French Concentration in the Languages and Culture (Romance Languages) Minor requires students to complete a minimum ‘C+’ average in 15 credits of first- and second-year French courses, or 9 credits for those who have completed French Immersion 12, starting at FRCH 221. Early courses include FRCH 121 and 122 (Intermediate French), FRCH 221 and 222 (French Oral and Written Practice), and FRCH 230 (Introduction to Francophone Culture and Literature). Students without French 12 must first complete prerequisite courses such as FRCH 100 or 101. In the third and fourth years, students must complete at least 18 credits of upper-level French or related language courses, including FRCH 300 (Critical Analysis and Writing Skills), FRCH 301 (Oral Expression and Cultural Exploration), and four electives like FRCH 320 (Phonetics), FRCH 330 (Development of the Novel), or LANG 417 (Special Topics in Romance Culture). Up to 6 credits of relevant upper-level courses outside the Modern Languages department and up to 9 credits from approved field schools or exchanges may also count toward the concentration. For the Spanish Concentration, students must achieve a ‘C+’ average in 15 credits of first- and second-year Spanish, including courses such as SPAN 100 and 101 (Beginning Spanish), SPAN 200 and 201 (Intermediate Spanish), and one cultural course like SPAN 210 or 230. Third- and fourth-year requirements include 18 credits with courses such as SPAN 300 and 301 (Advanced Spanish), and electives like SPAN 330 (Hispanic Literature), SPAN 417 (Special Topics), and LANG 470 (Translation Theory). Native speakers should consult the department for placement.
