COURSE CURRICULUM

The English (BA) Program requires a structured progression across four years. In Year 1, students must complete six credits of Degree English Requirements, with LBST 111 and 112 (minimum "C" grade) fulfilling prerequisites for all 200-level English courses; the department recommends ENGL 125 and 135 for majors. In Year 2, students take twelve credits of 200-level courses, including three credits each from Literature and Culture II (e.g., ENGL 220-233, exploring literature’s historical and cultural contexts), Literature and Criticism II (e.g., ENGL 240, applying critical theory), Literature and Traditions II (e.g., ENGL 273-274, examining historical literary settings), and three credits from categories like University Writing II (e.g., ENGL 203-208, enhancing writing and research skills) or Book Club (ENGL 280, offering a non-traditional reading experience). In Years 3 and 4, students complete thirty credits of 300- or 400-level courses (minimum 2.0 GPA), including three credits each from Literature and Culture III (e.g., ENGL 325-335, covering diverse topics like environmental or Indigenous literature), Literature and Criticism III (e.g., ENGL 310-480, focusing on rhetoric and theory), twelve credits from Literature and Traditions III (including pre-1700 and 1700-1900 courses like ENGL 300-350), and twelve additional credits from any 300- or 400-level English courses.
