COURSE CURRICULUM

The Earth Science program begins in the first year with foundational courses such as Discovering Planet Earth, Understanding Earth's History, and Laboratory and Field Studies in Earth Science, totaling 11 credits. In the second year, students complete three courses from options including Mineralogy, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, Earth Structures, and Geological Field Methods and Mapping, with GEOL 206 being an intensive ten-day off-campus field course held after the Spring term exams. These courses provide essential knowledge and hands-on experience, preparing students for advanced study. In the third and fourth years, students must complete a minimum of twelve credits of upper-level GEOL courses numbered 300 and above, though GEOL 491 does not count toward this requirement. Additionally, up to three credits from related courses in Chemistry and Geography can be applied to this requirement, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests within Earth Science. This structure offers a comprehensive education that integrates theory, practical fieldwork, and interdisciplinary learning, equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary for careers in environmental consulting, resource management, government agencies, and education, particularly for those interested in teaching science at the primary and secondary levels.
