COURSE CURRICULUM

The Child and Youth Care (CYC) degree program is structured over four years, each totaling 30 credits, to provide comprehensive training for students pursuing careers in child and youth care counselling. In Year 1, students focus on foundational courses such as Child Development, Interpersonal Communication Skills, and Theoretical Foundations in CYC, alongside university-level writing and elective courses, accumulating 30 credits. To advance to Year 2, students must complete at least 24 credits including English 115. Year 2 deepens practical skills and knowledge through courses like Family Development and Support, Counselling Skills, Trauma and Resiliency, and an introductory supervised practicum totaling 6 credits, plus electives, requiring 30 credits to move forward. By Year 3, students engage in community and program development, research methods, law, assessment and service planning, and a substantial 9-credit supervised practicum, with a focus on issues like colonization and substance use in CYC practice. Year 4 emphasizes advanced practicum experience (9 credits), therapeutic assessment, mental health, intervention plans, child safety, and advanced group practice, rounding out the final 30 credits. The program balances theory, applied skills, and hands-on practicum to prepare graduates with the expertise and experience needed for effective child and youth care practice in diverse settings.
