COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry (BA) program at VIU offers a structured pathway through foundational and advanced chemistry courses designed to build a solid understanding of key chemical principles and practical skills. In the first year, students choose between two sequences of Chemistry Fundamentals I and II, including theory and laboratory components. The choice between CHEM 141/141A and CHEM 142/142A depends on prior chemistry experience, ensuring students are placed at the appropriate level. In the second year, students select at least 11 credits from 200-level chemistry courses, which allow them to deepen their knowledge and prepare for more specialized study. These courses often serve as prerequisites for upper-level classes, so careful planning is encouraged. During the third and fourth years, students complete a minimum of 12 credits from Chemistry courses numbered 300 or above, spanning at least four different classes. These advanced courses provide opportunities to explore specific areas of interest and gain in-depth knowledge, supporting various career goals in fields like environmental consulting, teaching, and research. This progression through the curriculum ensures a comprehensive education in chemistry, emphasizing both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills, while allowing flexibility to align with individual academic and professional objectives.
