COURSE CURRICULUM

The Anthropology (BA) Major at Vancouver Island University requires students to meet all institutional BA degree requirements, including Degree English Requirements, along with specific Anthropology coursework. In the first two years, students must complete ANTH 111, 112, 212, 213, 214, and 215, each with a minimum grade of "C" to advance to upper-level courses. In Years 3 and 4, students must complete at least 30 credits in Anthropology courses numbered 300 or above, with selections across three key subfields: a minimum of 6 credits in Sociocultural Anthropology (from courses such as ANTH 304, 311, 325, etc.), 6 credits in Archaeology (from options like ANTH 340, 345, 391, etc.), and 3 credits in Biological Anthropology (including ANTH 350, 354, 430, etc.). Students may substitute one Global Studies course (GLST 390, 391, 490, or 491) for 3 upper-level Anthropology credits. Field studies courses such as ANTH 315 and 361A/B do not count toward subfield requirements but offer valuable hands-on experience. ANTH 325, 390, 391, and 392 may be repeated with different topics. Students are encouraged to exceed the minimum credit requirements for broader knowledge and may pursue internships, directed studies (ANTH 490), or Honours if considering graduate school. Double Majors are also an option with appropriate departmental advising.
