COURSE CURRICULUM

The Heavy Mechanical Trades program consists of four terms and a total of 60 credits, structured to provide comprehensive training in the inspection, service, and repair of commercial trucks, diesel engines, transport trailers, buses, and other heavy-duty equipment. In term 1, students build foundational skills with courses such as Occupational Skills, Shop Tooling and Equipment, Lubricants, Bearings and Equipment Operation, Machine Structure, and Truck Structure, accumulating 16 credits. Term 2 focuses on more advanced mechanical systems including Mobile Hydraulic Systems, Batteries and Electricity Fundamentals, Machine Electrical, and Heavy Mechanical Steering Systems, for 15 credits. Term 3 advances into specialized systems with courses like Heavy Mechanical Hydraulic Brake Systems, Heavy Mechanical Air Brake Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, Trailers and Engine Support, and Powertrain, adding another 14 credits. In the final term, students focus on diagnostics and systems integration with Powertrain Diagnostics, Service & Repair, Electrical Systems and Components, Electronics and Electronic Components, and Light Duty Vehicle, earning 15 more credits. Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience and develop industry-relevant technical competencies. Graduates are prepared to begin their careers at the first-year apprentice level across trades such as heavy-duty equipment technician, truck and transport mechanic, diesel engine mechanic, and transport trailer technician, meeting provincial certification standards.
