COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Care and Education program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for specialized careers in caring for children aged 0 to 6, including those with special needs. The first year focuses on foundational knowledge and practical skills, beginning with courses such as Introduction to Early Childhood Care and Education Studies, Foundations in ECCE, and Communication, alongside field studies and observation techniques. Students learn about child growth and development, guiding and caring practices, and engage in multiple field studies and practicums to gain hands-on experience in early childhood environments. The second year deepens students’ understanding with advanced courses in child growth and development specific to infant toddler and special needs care, advanced health, safety, and nutrition, and the role of the caregiver. Students complete multiple practicums focusing on infants, toddlers, and special needs children, enabling them to apply theory in real-world settings and develop professional caregiving skills. Additional courses emphasize professional perspectives, family relationship enhancement, and childcare administration, preparing graduates for leadership and advocacy roles in childcare settings. Throughout the program, students cultivate skills in program planning, observation, communication, and cultural sensitivity, with a strong focus on inclusive care and development. This structured, hands-on learning approach ensures graduates are well-prepared to provide nurturing, ethical, and effective care in diverse early childhood education environments, meeting the certification requirements of the B.C. Ministry of Children and Family Development and equipping them for meaningful careers as Infant Toddler Educators and Special Needs Educators.
