COURSE CURRICULUM

The Preparatory Certificate in Music at VCC is a two-term program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in music theory, musicianship, and performance to prepare for entry into the Music Diploma program. In the first term, students complete MUSC 1011 Preparatory Musicianship 1 and MUSC 1013 Preparatory Music Theory 1, each worth 2 credits, which introduce the essential concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony, and music notation. MUSC 1041 Preparatory Performance Techniques 1 and MUSC 1050 Preparatory Music Individual Instruction 1 help students develop fundamental performance skills on their primary instrument or voice, while MUSC 1054 Preparatory Class Piano 1 focuses on basic keyboard techniques. Students also participate in MUSC 2490 Performance Ensemble 1 to gain ensemble experience and develop collaborative musicianship. The second term continues this training with MUSC 1031 Preparatory Musicianship 2 and MUSC 1033 Preparatory Music Theory 2, advancing students’ theoretical knowledge and aural skills. MUSC 1042 Preparatory Performance Techniques 2 and MUSC 1060 Preparatory Music Individual Instruction 2 further enhance students’ technical and interpretative abilities. MUSC 1064 Preparatory Class Piano 2 builds on previous keyboard skills, and participation in MUSC 2490 Performance Ensemble 2 continues to reinforce group performance experience. The program totals 18 credits and delivers a balanced curriculum that fosters musical literacy, technical skill, and performance confidence.
