ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Vancouver Community College (VCC), founded in 1965, is the oldest community college in British Columbia, originally established as Vancouver City College through a merger of four local institutions. Renamed in 1974, VCC now operates two main campuses—Broadway and Downtown—both accessible via Vancouver’s SkyTrain, along with multiple community outreach centres. The college offers a wide range of programs including 79 certificate, 24 diploma, 9 award of achievement, 8 apprenticeship, 4 statement of completion, 3 bachelor's degree, and 2 associate degree programs. A significant expansion at the Broadway campus in 2009 added a $55 million, seven-storey building for health sciences. From 2014 to 2022, VCC shared space with BCIT at Annacis Island for heavy mechanical trades before consolidating most of those programs back to BCIT and VCC’s Broadway campus. The college is governed by a Board of Governors under the College and Institutes Act, comprising eight government appointees, the college president, the Chair of Education Council, and four elected members, including faculty, support staff, and student representatives. VCC is notable for being the only institution where a support staff member has served as board chair, emphasizing its inclusive governance model.
