COURSE CURRICULUM

The curriculum for the curriculum development concentration within the Master of Education program is designed to equip students with a deep understanding of theoretical and developmental aspects of curriculum in both Canadian and international contexts. The program emphasizes the examination of philosophical orientations, conceptual frameworks, and research methodologies relevant to education, enabling students to critically analyze and enhance curriculum design and implementation. Students may complete the program through one of three streams—course-based, major paper, or thesis—each tailored to different professional and academic goals. All students engage with mandatory foundational courses, including EDUC-8001, Research in Education, which introduces essential research principles and practices, and EDUC-8004, Fundamentals of Curriculum Theory and Development, which provides a comprehensive overview of curriculum theory and practical strategies for development. Students in the course-based stream take EDUC-8001 and complete a one-credit Final Project Seminar (EDUC-8795), while those in the major paper and thesis streams take both EDUC-8001 and EDUC-8002, Statistics in Education, to develop quantitative research skills. Major paper students complete EDUC-8960, a two-credit research project, whereas thesis students complete EDUC-8970, a four-credit in-depth research thesis. Overall, this concentration enables students to strengthen their research capabilities, expand their theoretical knowledge, and apply evidence-based practices to improve professional educational practice.
