COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry program offers a comprehensive progression of courses across undergraduate and graduate levels, designed to build a strong foundation in chemical principles while providing opportunities for specialization and research. At the 1000-level, courses such as CHEM 1003 Alchemy to Chemistry, CHEM 1100 and 1110 General Chemistry, and CHEM 1103 Topics in General Chemistry introduce fundamental concepts, laboratory skills, and historical perspectives. The 2000-level curriculum expands into analytical, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry with courses like CHEM 2003 Contemporary Chemistry, CHEM 2200 Analytical Chemistry, CHEM 2300–2325 Organic Chemistry series, CHEM 2400–2410 Physical Chemistry, and CHEM 2500–2510 Inorganic Chemistry, emphasizing practical and theoretical understanding. At the 3000-level, students engage with advanced topics such as CHEM 3210 Instrumental Analysis, CHEM 3300 Spectroscopic Structure Identification, intermediate organic chemistry, quantum chemistry, organometallics, materials chemistry, and co-op work terms (CHEM 3909), combining research and professional experience. The 4000-level courses focus on advanced specialization, including statistical thermodynamics, advanced organic and physical chemistry, spectroscopy, polymer chemistry, nanomaterials, bio- and sustainable materials, and leadership development, with research and internship opportunities (CHEM 4900, 4908). Graduate-level 8000 courses, such as CHEM 8008 Directed Special Studies and special topics in analytical and organic chemistry, enable in-depth exploration, independent research, and mastery of specialized areas, equipping students with expertise for careers in academia, industry, or research-intensive professions.
