COURSE CURRICULUM

The Women’s and Gender Studies program offers students an in-depth understanding of how gender, race, sexuality, and other social identities shape experiences and power dynamics in society. Through a range of courses, students explore topics such as women in Canadian society, queer activism, gender, sexuality and social justice, feminist philosophies, and the history of women’s movements in North America. The program also addresses critical issues such as violence against women, masculinities, law and gender, social work, and environmental justice, enabling students to examine societal structures from multiple perspectives. Upper-level courses provide opportunities for advanced research, independent study, and seminars that focus on emerging feminist scholarship, history of gender and sexuality, and the exploration of the feminist voice, encouraging students to engage critically with theory while applying it to real-world contexts. The curriculum emphasizes intersectionality, examining how class, race, ability, sexuality, and spirituality intersect with gender to shape lived experiences. Students are equipped to analyze sociopolitical forces at local, national, and global levels, and to become active participants in community capacity building and social change. Graduates leave with strong analytical, research, and advocacy skills, prepared to pursue careers in education, social services, law, policy, activism, and other fields where understanding equity, diversity, and social justice is essential.
