COURSE CURRICULUM

The Communication, Media and Film curriculum offers a comprehensive progression from foundational concepts to advanced theoretical and practical applications. At the 1000 level, students are introduced to key ideas through courses such as CMAF 1010 Introduction to Media and Society, along with hands-on production courses like CMAF 1120 and 1130, and film-focused study in CMAF 1400. The 2000-level courses expand knowledge into areas such as media literacy, communication theory, public relations, advertising, podcasting, and research methods, while also exploring cinema history and cultural policy, helping students understand media’s role in society. At the 3000 level, the focus shifts to critical analysis and contemporary issues, including digital technologies, popular culture, surveillance, environmental impacts, and media activism, alongside opportunities for internships that provide real-world experience. Advanced 4000-level courses emphasize specialization and independent work, with topics such as media culture, sociology of news, film theory, gender and technology, and border culture. Students also complete capstone projects involving research design, writing, and presentation, as well as honours seminars and directed readings. Internship opportunities at both intermediate and advanced levels allow students to apply their skills professionally. Overall, the program equips students with strong analytical, creative, and communication skills for careers in media, communication, and related industries.
