ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Windsor (UWindsor), Canada’s southernmost university, is a public research institution located in Windsor, Ontario. It was officially established in 1962, evolving from Assumption College, a Roman Catholic institution founded by Jesuits in 1857 and later operated by the Basilian Fathers. Over time, Assumption expanded academically, becoming Assumption University of Windsor in 1956 and partnering with the non-denominational Essex College. To meet growing regional educational needs, UWindsor was formally incorporated in 1962 and began operations in 1963, with Assumption remaining as a federated theological institution. The university rapidly expanded under its early leadership, notably opening a law school in 1968. Today, UWindsor serves approximately 17,500 students across nine faculties, including Arts, Law, Business, Engineering, and Nursing. Its research strengths include automotive, environmental, social justice, and international trade, with increasing focus on health, natural sciences, and entrepreneurship. It has developed strong industry and academic partnerships, such as with Chrysler for the Automotive Research and Development Centre and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry for medical education. With over 150,000 alumni and a continued commitment to innovation and community engagement, the University of Windsor plays a vital role in Ontario’s and Canada’s higher education system.
