ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Toronto (U of T) is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario, established in 1827 as King's College under a royal charter. Originally tied to the Church of England, it became a secular institution in 1850 and was renamed. It comprises 11 colleges and operates three campuses: St. George (downtown Toronto), Scarborough, and Mississauga. U of T offers over 700 undergraduate and 200 graduate programs and receives the highest research funding and endowment among Canadian universities. It is known for the Toronto School in literary and communication theory and is a founding site of major scientific advancements, including insulin, stem cell research, the first pacemaker, deep learning, and the first electron microscope.The university's alumni include 13 Nobel laureates, 6 Turing Award winners, 100 Rhodes Scholars, and five Canadian prime ministers. Its athletic teams, the Varsity Blues, have historical roots in Canadian sports. Founded to counter American republicanism, the university became secular following political pressure and the rise of reform movements. It pioneered many educational and cultural institutions in Canada, such as the University of Toronto Press, Royal Ontario Museum, and Canada’s first forestry and engineering faculties. It admitted women in 1884 and played a role in Canadian military history through the University Rifle Corps.
