COURSE CURRICULUM

Students in the thesis option of the Master of Science in Physics and Astronomy program must complete four one-term courses, each with a 0.50 unit weight. These courses include one Physics core course, two graduate-level courses, and one additional course that can be either a graduate-level or an approved 300 or 400-level undergraduate course. Any undergraduate course must receive prior approval from the student’s supervisor, the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the Associate Dean of Science for Graduate Studies before enrollment. The Physics core courses available to students include Quantum Mechanics 1 (PHYS 701), Introduction to Quantum Field Theory (PHYS 703), Statistical Physics 1 (PHYS 704), Electromagnetic Theory (PHYS 706), Quantum Information Processing (PHYS 767), Fundamentals of Astrophysics (PHYS 781), and Fundamentals of Astrophysics II: Observational Techniques and Data Analysis (PHYS 782). To maintain satisfactory standing in the program, students must achieve an average grade of at least 70% across these required courses, with a minimum passing grade of 65% in each individual course. Failure to meet these grade requirements or receiving a failing grade in any course may result in the student being required to withdraw from the program.
