COURSE CURRICULUM

Students pursuing the thesis option in quantum information science must complete four one-term courses, each with a 0.50 unit weight. These include PHYS 767 Quantum Information Processing, which is cross-listed with QIC 710, providing foundational knowledge in the theoretical aspects of quantum information. Additionally, students must take QIC 750 Quantum Information Processing Devices, focusing on the practical implementation and hardware of quantum information systems. Alongside these core courses, students are required to complete one graduate-level course relevant to their research interests to deepen their expertise in a specialized area. The fourth course can be either a graduate-level or a 400-level undergraduate course; however, enrollment in this course requires prior approval from the student’s supervisor, the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the Associate Dean of Science for Graduate Studies. This ensures that the course content aligns with the student’s academic and research goals. Together, these courses provide a comprehensive foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of quantum information science, preparing students to conduct original research that contributes to advancements in this rapidly evolving field. This course structure supports the development of a robust thesis, enabling students to engage with cutting-edge topics and technologies in quantum information processing.
