COURSE CURRICULUM

The thesis option for the Master of Actuarial Science requires students to complete four one-term courses labeled ACTSC or STAT with an overall average of at least 70%. These courses must include ACTSC 895 Communications in Actuarial Science, and at least two 900-level courses, with at least one of those being an ACTSC course. Other courses may be substituted with approval from the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies. Additionally, students must complete a master’s thesis and deliver an oral presentation. Alternatively, the master’s research paper option requires completion of seven one-term courses labeled ACTSC or STAT, also with a minimum 70% average. These courses must include ACTSC 895 Communications in Actuarial Science, two of the following: ACTSC 855 Life Contingencies 3, ACTSC 962 Insurance Risk Models, ACTSC 964 Foundations of Quantitative Risk Management, or ACTSC 970 Finance 1. Students must also take one course from a list including ACTSC 974 Financial Econometrics, STAT 831 Generalized Linear Models and Applications, STAT 840 Computational Inference, STAT 841 Statistical Learning - Classification, or STAT 906 Computer Intensive Methods for Stochastic Models in Finance. At least three of the courses must be at the 900-level, and a minimum of five of the seven courses must be ACTSC-labeled. Course substitutions require approval from the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies.
