COURSE CURRICULUM

Master of Environmental Studies in Planning program, students must complete a comprehensive set of required courses designed to provide a strong foundation in planning theory, practice, and research methods. These courses include PLAN700 Planning Paradigms and Theory, PLAN701 Land Use Planning Fundamentals, PLAN703 Planning Professional Practice, PLAN704 Methods of Planning Analysis, PLAN710 Research Design, PLAN720 Introductory Planning Project Studio, and PLAN721 Advanced Planning Project Studio. Together, these courses total 4.5 units and cover key areas such as planning theory, land use, professional ethics, research methodologies, and practical project experience through studio work. In addition to these core courses, students are required to select three 600-level elective one-term courses, totaling 1.50 units, from a list of quantitatively oriented environmental courses identified by the School of Planning. These electives allow students to tailor their studies to their specific research interests while gaining advanced skills in environmental planning and analysis. Some electives may be taken in other departments with the approval of the student’s supervisor, ensuring the program remains flexible and interdisciplinary. One half-course option may be a reading course. This rigorous coursework prepares students for successful thesis research and contributes to their development as well-rounded environmental planning professionals.
