COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s Research Paper option in the Master of Environmental Studies in Geography Collaborative Water program combines core coursework with applied research to develop both theoretical understanding and practical skills in geography and water studies. Students must complete GEOG700A and GEOG700B (Geographic Scholarship and Practice 1 and 2, each 0.25 unit), which build academic and professional competencies. They are also required to take WATER601 – Integrated Water Management (0.50) and WATER602 – Integrated Water Management Project (0.50), offering interdisciplinary perspectives and hands-on experience with real-world water issues. In addition, students must choose one methods-focused course from a list that includes GEOG604 (Spatial Statistics), GEOG617 (Applied Statistics in Ecology and Environment), GEOG620 (Foundations in Human Geography), GEOG625 (Qualitative Methods in Geography), or GEOG640 (Contextualizing Research in Earth System Science), each worth 0.50 units. To support their research paper and broaden expertise, students also complete two additional graduate-level courses (0.50 each) from GEOG or GEMCC that align with their research interests; elective courses from outside these departments may be approved by the Graduate Officer. This coursework supports the completion of a research paper exploring topics in human or physical geography, geomatics, or related applied areas, typically within a one-year timeframe.
