COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering in Systems Design Engineering requires students to complete two core graduate courses: SYDE 600 Systems Theory, Models, Research & Design, and one Systems Design Graduate Workshop 1 from options including AI and Machine Learning, Biomedical Systems, Human Factors, Mechatronic & Physical Systems, Vision, Image & Signal Processing, or the general workshop. In addition, students must complete six graduate engineering courses, with at least two from Systems Design Engineering at the 500, 600, or 700 level, a maximum of two courses at the 500 level, and up to two courses from the Faculty of Mathematics. Students may also pursue one of five Graduate Specializations—Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Biomedical Systems, Human Factors, Mechatronics and Physical Systems, or Vision, Image and Signal Processing—each requiring three specified courses and at least one elective from designated course lists. Only one 500-level course can count toward specialization requirements. All course selections are arranged by the student in consultation with supervisors and the Graduate Administrator. These requirements are in addition to any transitional courses assigned upon admission. Graduate Specializations are recognized on transcripts, reflecting in-depth study in a focused area, though not noted on the diploma. This structure ensures a flexible yet rigorous program that allows students to tailor their education toward specific interdisciplinary fields within Systems Design Engineering while maintaining a broad engineering foundation.
