COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s Research Paper option in the Economic Development and Innovation program requires students to complete a set of core courses focused on foundational economic development theories, frameworks, policies, and analytical tools. These core courses include Economic Development: Theories and Frameworks, Economic Development: Policy and Practice, Analytical Tools for Economic Development, and Management and Policy Tools for Economic Development and Sustainability Professionals. In addition, students take thematic courses such as Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development and Innovation and Economic Development in Cities and Regions, which deepen their understanding of specific areas within economic development. To complement these, students are encouraged to select two elective courses from a recommended list that includes Industrial Location Theory and Concepts, Land Development Planning, Community Economic Development, Social Entrepreneurship and Scaling Social Innovation, Stakeholder Engagement, Collaborations and Partnerships, Sustainable Cities, and Enterprise Marketing and Social Accountability. Other electives may be considered with approval from the Program Director. This blend of core, thematic, and elective courses equips students with a comprehensive and practical understanding of economic development, preparing them for applied research and professional roles in government, industry, or non-profit sectors focused on fostering innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth in communities and regions.
