COURSE CURRICULUM

Students pursuing the thesis option in the Master of Applied Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering Collaborative Nanotechnology program must complete at least five courses, each with a 0.50 unit weight. This includes the required NANO 600 Introduction to Nanotechnology course, one nanotechnology elective, and three additional elective courses. The choice of electives must be approved by the student’s supervisor and should come from within the Faculties of Engineering, Science, or Mathematics to ensure relevant specialization. Students who have already earned a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree in Nanotechnology Engineering from the University of Waterloo are exempt from taking NANO 600 and instead may select an additional nanotechnology elective to fulfill the course credit requirement. The available nanotechnology electives cover a broad spectrum of specialized topics, such as characterization of nanomaterials, structure and spectroscopy of nanoscale materials, nanocomposites, nanomechanics, molecular dynamics simulations, and design of micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS). Advanced courses also explore quantum phenomena in nanostructures and the fabrication processes involved in nanoscale device engineering. Together, these courses provide a comprehensive and rigorous foundation that supports research and innovation in nanotechnology, equipping students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for advancing in this rapidly evolving field.
