COURSE CURRICULUM

For the thesis option in the Master of Applied Science in Civil Engineering program, students are required to complete four one-term graduate courses, each carrying a 0.50 unit weight, from the 500, 600, or 700 series that are acceptable for graduate credit by the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. These courses must be selected in consultation with the student’s supervisor to ensure they align with the research focus and academic goals. Students must maintain an overall average of at least 70% across these courses to meet program standards. It is important to note that only one of these courses can be at the 500 level; the remaining courses must be at the 600 or 700 level to ensure advanced graduate-level study. The coursework is designed to complement the student’s thesis research, providing a strong theoretical foundation and specialized knowledge in their chosen area of civil engineering. This course structure supports the development of critical thinking, research skills, and technical expertise needed to successfully complete an independent research thesis and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field. Maintaining this balance of coursework and research prepares students for professional practice or further academic pursuits, such as a PhD.
