COURSE CURRICULUM

The thesis option of the Master of Arts in Recreation and Leisure program requires students to complete five graduate-level courses (each with a 0.50 unit weight), designed to provide a strong foundation in research and analytical skills. The core courses include REC 600 Integrative Seminar in Recreation and Leisure Studies, REC 662 Quantitative Inquiry, and REC 663 Qualitative Inquiry. To further specialize in research methodology, students must complete one of either REC 672 Quantitative Research Data Analysis and Interpretation or REC 673 Designing Advanced Qualitative Inquiry. In addition, students must take at least one other elective graduate course, which can be selected from within or outside the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies. This elective must be approved in consultation with the student’s supervisor or advisor to ensure alignment with the student's academic and research goals. All graduate courses must receive a numerical grade unless explicitly listed as credit/no credit (CR/NCR) in the Graduate Calendar. Students enrolling in courses outside the Faculty of Health must also request that the instructor assign a numerical grade unless CR/NCR is the default. This requirement must be clarified with the instructor within the first two weeks of the term to ensure proper academic assessment and progress.
