COURSE CURRICULUM

Master of Arts in Planning program requires students to complete a comprehensive set of courses designed to provide a strong foundation in planning theory, practice, and research. Students must complete PLAN700 Planning Paradigms and Theory, PLAN701 Land Use Planning Fundamentals, PLAN703 Planning Professional Practice, PLAN704 Methods of Planning Analysis, and PLAN710 Research Design, each carrying 0.50 units. Additionally, students must complete two studio courses, PLAN720 Introductory Planning Project Studio and PLAN721 Advanced Planning Project Studio, each valued at 1.00 unit, which offer practical, hands-on experience in planning projects. Beyond these core requirements, students must also complete three 600-level elective one-term courses totaling 1.50 units. Elective courses can be chosen from the School of Planning or other departments, subject to the supervisor’s advice and approval, with one half-course allowed to be a reading course. Students who have a prior degree in planning may request to substitute an additional elective course in place of PLAN701, pending approval from the Associate Director of Graduate Studies. Requests for substitution should be submitted via email to the Graduate Program Administrator. This structured coursework prepares students thoroughly for their thesis research and professional planning careers.
