COURSE CURRICULUM

MA in German requires students to complete a comprehensive set of courses and seminars that support advanced research and interdisciplinary study. Core requirements include GER 700 Methods of Research (or an equivalent course), GER 792 Master’s Thesis Colloquium, and GER 793 Knowledge Transfer & Reflection, which collectively build research skills, facilitate thesis development, and encourage critical reflection on knowledge dissemination. Students must also take one graduate seminar each in Applied Linguistics, Literature/Media Studies, and Intercultural Perspectives, ensuring a well-rounded academic foundation. In addition, students are required to complete at least four more graduate seminars focused on either Literature/Media Studies or Applied Linguistics, with each seminar carrying a 0.50 credit weight. The program also includes two graduate lecture courses taken at the Universität Mannheim—one in Literature/Media Studies and one in Applied Linguistics—fostering a transatlantic academic experience. This curriculum is designed to provide students with a robust interdisciplinary framework, advanced research methodologies, and intercultural insights necessary for producing a rigorous master’s thesis. Together, these courses and seminars prepare graduates to contribute original scholarship and excel in academic or professional careers related to German studies, applied linguistics, literature, media, and intercultural communication.
