COURSE CURRICULUM

Students pursuing the thesis option in the Master of Arts in Geography program must complete a series of core and elective courses designed to support and enhance their research. Required courses include GEOG 700A and GEOG 700B (Geographic Scholarship and Practice 1 and 2, each 0.25 unit weight), which provide foundational academic and professional training in geographic research. In addition, students must complete one of the following 0.50 unit courses based on their research focus: GEOG 604 (Spatial Statistics), GEOG 617 (Applied Statistics in Ecology and Environment), GEOG 620 (Foundations in Human Geography), GEOG 625 (Qualitative Methods in Geography), or GEOG 640 (Contextualizing Research in Earth System Science). To round out their academic training, students must also complete two additional graduate-level courses (0.50 unit weight each) from GEOG or GEMCC that align with and complement their research area. With approval from the Graduate Officer, one elective may be taken outside the department. This structured yet flexible curriculum ensures students are equipped with the theoretical knowledge and methodological tools needed to conduct original research culminating in a thesis that contributes meaningfully to their chosen field within geography.
