COURSE CURRICULUM

Students in the thesis option of the Master of Arts in French Studies program must complete FR 600: Research Methods and Professional Communication in French Studies, which provides essential training in research methodology and academic communication. In addition to this core course, students are required to complete a minimum of three one-term (0.50 unit weight) graduate-level courses offered within the Department of French Studies. These courses are designed to deepen students’ expertise in areas such as French literature, francophone cultures, linguistics, and digital humanities, while supporting the development of their thesis research. With approval from the Associate Chair, Graduate Studies, students may take one course outside the department if it aligns with their academic interests and contributes meaningfully to their thesis work. The thesis itself, which involves original research on a topic relevant to French studies, allows students to engage deeply with their subject area, demonstrate critical thinking, and contribute to scholarly discourse. This combination of focused coursework and sustained independent research equips students with the analytical, theoretical, and communication skills necessary for academic advancement or careers in education, public service, international organizations, publishing, or cultural institutions, both in Canada and internationally.
