COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics and Astronomy program requires completion of a comprehensive set of courses designed to build a strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and science communication. Students must complete core courses such as Principles of Computing for Science, Calculus 1 through 3, Differential Equations, and several physics courses including Mechanics, Waves, Electricity and Magnetism, Modern Physics, and Quantum Physics, all accompanied by corresponding laboratory components to ensure hands-on learning. Specialized astronomy courses like Introduction to the Universe, Stars, Galaxies, and Cosmology are also integral parts of the curriculum, along with labs focused on astronomical observations and instrumentation. To further enhance analytical skills, students complete courses in probability, statistics, data analysis, and mathematical physics. Communication skills are developed through a required science communication course. Students select two advanced electives, which may include topics such as General Relativity, Planets, or Advanced Computational Physics, and participate in additional advanced physics labs. The program also mandates 1.25 units of approved biology, chemistry, or earth sciences courses to provide breadth in scientific understanding. Finally, students must complete extra physics courses, including a 400-level lecture, to deepen their expertise. This diverse and rigorous curriculum prepares graduates for research and professional careers in physics, astronomy, and related fields.
