COURSE CURRICULUM

The program requires completion of 18 units including core courses such as BIOL240 Fundamentals of Microbiology and its lab, BIOL241 Introduction to Applied Microbiology, BIOL350 Ecosystem Ecology, BIOL351 Aquatic Ecology, BIOL354 Environmental Toxicology, and BIOL447 Environmental Microbiology. Chemistry courses include CHEM120 and CHEM123 General Chemistry with their labs, plus CHEM220 Introductory Analytical Chemistry. Essential Earth science courses include EARTH121 and EARTH121L Introductory Earth Sciences, EARTH122 and EARTH122L Introductory Environmental Sciences, EARTH123 Introductory Hydrology, EARTH221 Introductory Geochemistry, EARTH223 Field Methods in Hydrology, EARTH342 Geomorphology and GIS Applications, EARTH355 Water: Data to Decisions, EARTH421 Advanced Geochemistry, EARTH458 Physical Hydrogeology and its lab, and ERS316 Urban Water and Wastewater Systems. Geography courses GEOG305 Fluvial Geomorphology and GEOG407 Environmental Hydrology of Terrestrial Ecosystems are also required, along with foundational math and science courses MATH127 Calculus 1, PHYS111 Physics 1, and STAT202 Introductory Statistics for Scientists. Students choose one course each from BIOL110 or BIOL165, BIOL150 or BIOL251, and BIOL312 or BIOL470. They must complete three electives from a list including biostatistics, marine biology, and advanced hydrogeology topics, plus one Applied Wetland Science course. Communication skills are covered through COMMST193 or ENGL193. The program concludes with a choice between GEOG453 or PLAN453 Urban Stormwater Management, providing a comprehensive interdisciplinary foundation in environmental and Earth sciences.
