COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Sciences program requires students to complete 16.75 units, starting with foundational courses such as BIOL110 Biodiversity, Biomes, and Evolution, BIOL130 Introductory Cell Biology, and CHEM120 General Chemistry 1 along with its laboratory component. Core courses cover diverse topics including ecology, genetics, microbiology, and Earth sciences like introductory hydrology and geochemistry, supported by practical labs and field methods. Students also take STAT202 for essential scientific statistics and select communication courses such as COMMST193 or ENGL193. Math requirements include either MATH114 Linear Algebra or MATH127 Calculus 1. Beyond the core, students choose one course from invertebrate zoology, plant physiology, or comparative animal physiology to deepen their biological understanding. Further specialization involves selecting two courses from a diverse list including aquatic and tropical ecosystems, environmental microbiology, conservation biology, and population genetics, among others. Additionally, students must complete four more units from an advanced selection of ecology, marine biology, biostatistics, and environmental management courses, allowing for tailored expertise in areas like wetland science, ecological risk assessment, or fisheries biology. The program balances theoretical knowledge with practical skills, preparing students for careers in environmental science and management while offering opportunities for hands-on research through senior honours projects and field courses.
