COURSE CURRICULUM

The Applied Mathematics program at the University of Waterloo offers a rigorous and flexible curriculum designed to equip students with strong analytical and computational skills for solving real-world problems. Core required courses include advanced calculus (AMATH231), differential equations (AMATH250/251, AMATH353), and computational methods (AMATH342), with options to specialize through electives in areas such as mathematical biology, climate science, fluid mechanics, quantum theory, machine learning, and data-driven modeling. Students build a solid foundation in analysis through courses like Applied Real or Complex Analysis (AMATH331/332 or PMATH equivalents) and explore interdisciplinary applications by completing a subject concentration with four courses from a single area such as physics, engineering, biology, or economics. Elective options like AMATH445 (Scientific Machine Learning), AMATH451 (Dynamical Systems), and AMATH463 (Fluid Mechanics) allow for customization based on interests and career goals. Students also complete a high-level AMATH course at the 300- or 400-level and can engage in independent research via AMATH495 or AMATH499.
