COURSE CURRICULUM

The Actuarial Science program at the University of Waterloo features a comprehensive curriculum designed to develop strong analytical, mathematical, and financial expertise. Core required courses include foundational topics such as financial mathematics (ACTSC231), life contingencies (ACTSC232, ACTSC331), and investment science (ACTSC372), along with advanced subjects like financial markets (ACTSC446), casualty and health insurance mathematics (ACTSC363, ACTSC431), and stochastic processes (STAT333). Students also study professional communication (ENGL378), economics (ECON101, ECON102), and financial accounting (AFM101), ensuring a well-rounded understanding of both quantitative methods and business principles. Mathematical statistics (STAT330), applied linear models (STAT331), and a choice of differential equations (AMATH250/251/350) and multivariable calculus (MATH237/247) further build the technical foundation. The program includes electives in computational statistics (STAT340/341) and requires students to complete two additional 400-level ACTSC courses and one upper-year course from a selection of math-related departments. Students can also choose from specialized electives such as equity investments (AFM424), statistical learning (STAT441), forecasting (STAT443), and generalized linear models (STAT431).
