COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computing and Financial Management (CFM) program at Waterloo offers a unique interdisciplinary education by combining core studies in computer science and finance. Students complete foundational courses in programming (CS115/135/145), algorithm design (CS136/146), data structures (CS240/240E), object-oriented development (CS246/246E), and logic (CS245/245E), along with advanced courses such as algorithms (CS341), software development, cryptography (CO487), and electives from upper-year CS courses. On the finance side, students study introductory and intermediate accounting (AFM191, AFM291), corporate finance (AFM274), financial securities (AFM322, AFM424, AFM425), data analytics (CFM101, CFM301), and economics (ECON101, ECON102). Additional training in calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics, and combinatorics from the Faculty of Mathematics ensures a solid quantitative foundation. Students also complete communication courses and may choose electives in global markets, marketing, ethics, and international economics. The curriculum is supported by six co-op work terms, giving students real-world experience in sectors like investment banking, insurance, risk management, and fintech. With rigorous coursework from both the School of Accounting and Finance and the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, graduates are well-equipped for careers at the intersection of finance and technology, possessing the analytical, technical, and professional skills demanded by today’s data-driven economy.
