COURSE CURRICULUM

The Recreation and Leisure Studies (REC) program offers a comprehensive exploration of recreation, sport, leisure, and therapeutic practices through a wide range of courses designed to build both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Students begin with foundational courses like Introduction to the Study of Recreation and Leisure (REC100), Leisure, Sport, and Recreation Management (REC101), and Experience Design and Delivery (REC120), before advancing into specialized topics such as Therapeutic Recreation for developmental, emotional, and physical disabilities (REC251, REC252), and the associated practicum (REC253). The curriculum also covers diverse subjects including the Sociology and Philosophy of Sport (REC203, REC206), the Business of Professional Sport (REC213), and Marketing Recreation, Sport, and Events (REC215), ensuring a strong business and management background. Students engage with community-focused courses on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Entrepreneurship (REC201, REC218), and gain hands-on experience through practicums in recreation, sport, and tourism (REC312). Advanced courses address program evaluation, leadership, event planning, aging and leisure, ecotourism, and heritage conservation, while research opportunities include honours thesis projects (REC471A/B). The program prepares graduates for varied careers in recreation, therapeutic recreation, sport management, tourism, and community engagement, supported by a strong emphasis on innovation, social justice, and well-being in leisure services.
