COURSE CURRICULUM

The Recreation and Leisure Studies (REC) program offers a comprehensive exploration of recreation, sport, and leisure through a diverse range of courses that cover foundational topics such as the study of recreation and leisure, sport management, and therapeutic recreation. Students engage with subjects including experience design, equity and inclusion, sociology and philosophy of sport, and marketing of recreation and events. The curriculum also addresses specialized areas such as therapeutic recreation for various disabilities, community engagement, leadership in leisure organizations, and outdoor recreation. Practical learning is emphasized through multiple practicum courses and internships, providing hands-on experience in therapeutic recreation, sport, and tourism. Advanced courses focus on data analysis, program evaluation, and innovative solutions for healthy communities, while thematic seminars delve into aging, gender, urban recreation, ecotourism, and heritage conservation. Special topics courses and independent studies encourage students to apply research to real-world contexts, culminating in honours thesis options. With a balance of theoretical knowledge and applied skills, the program prepares students for diverse careers in recreation, sport, tourism, and community development, fostering leadership, inclusivity, and innovation in promoting well-being and social change.
